Wash Day September 6, 2014

This week's wash day went completely different than how I originally planned. In a previous post I mentioned ditching the pre-poo until further notice because I didn't feel it made a difference in my hair one way or the other, I may have been wrong. When I took down my hair Saturday morning to detangle before washing I noticed it looked extremely dry and brittle (think tumble weed), and I knew I had to do some extreme deep conditioning this wash session to repair the damage. Here is what I did to whip my hair back into shape:

  1.  Hot oil pre-poo: I heated a mug of water in the microwave for 1 minute and let my Hot Six Oil* sit in the hot water for about 2 minutes. Sectioning my hair into four quadrants I applied a generous amount of oil to each first, then working in 1/2 inch sections within each quadrant I applied more oil to both my hair and scalp. I wanted to create a steam affect so applied a plastic shower cap, a hot towel and a plastic grocery bag on top to trap the heat. I let this sit for about 25 minutes.
  2. Shampoo: Using my newly purchased Biosilk Hydrating Therapy Shampoo* I split my hair into two sections and proceeded to lather one section at a time. Since this is a sulfate free shampoo the first go around didn't give such a great lather, so I lathered a  second time on each side then rinsed for several minutes to prevent the product from clinging to my hair and scalp and leaving residue.
  3. Quick Condition: After wringing the excess water from my hair I separated my tresses into four quadrants and applied a generous amount of Biosilk Hydrating Therapy Conditioner*  then allowed it to sit for about 5 minutes. I noticed immediately that my hair softened and any tangles I had melted away.
  4. Hot Oil Treatment: Because my hair was so dry I felt a hot oil treatment was the best way to replenish moisture and give my strands some much needed TLC. I repeated the same steps I did for my pre-poo treatment only I did not apply any oil to my scalp; I left the oil on for 30 minutes then rinsed thoroughly with cool water.
  5. Leave-Ins: Because I intended to do a roller set using a styling product I opted to skip my normal light-weight leave-ins in exchange for the heavier, creamier ORS Moisturizing Hair Lotion.* My hope was that the lotion would serve as a buffer between my strands and my styling product while preserving the moisture from the conditioning treatments.
  6. Styling: Flex Rods!
    1. I sectioned my hair into four workable sections and proceeded to rod my hair starting from the nape of my neck and working my way up. I applied a small amount of Garnier Fructis Curl Construct Mousse* to each section before rolling.
    2. Because my hair is layered I start with the bigger (grey) rods in the back for length, the medium (purple) rods in the middle and towards the front, then framed my face with small (blue) flex rods to create a fringe/ bang effect.
    3. Drying: I sat beneath a hooded dryer for 1.5 hours and let my hair air dryer for about 2 hours.
    4. I separated the curls before bed and used the pineapple method to preserve the curls over night.

Results: The triple conditioning (two hot oil treatments and one regular conditioner) gave my hair a much needed boost of moisture and I can definitely see the affects of the hot oil. My hair is soft, supple, and has a great sheen. The Garnier Curl Construct Mousse gave my curls a great hold without weighing my hair down which allows my curls to hang, swing and bounce while retaining their shape and keep frizz at bay. I absolutely love the results of this set and the curls seem to get better and better as the week progresses.
